Ahu Karan Jespersen
I was born in Istanbul, Turkey. After high school, I lived in the USA and later in the UK to study. I hold a Bachelors degree and Masters of Art degree in Economics. I also hold a Masters of Science degree in Social Anthropology.
I have been teaching yoga since 2006. My teaching reflects the past 20 years of yoga studies. I enjoy teaching yoga to those who are seriously interested in the practice. It is important for me to get to know my students, prepare especially for their needs, so I can help their practice to evolve. That is why I have been studying yoga persistently for many years.
I was formerly authorised to teach Ashtanga yoga and after moving to Copenhagen, I began studying Iyengar Yoga and became a Certified Iyengar yoga teacher. I am mainly informed by Iyengar yoga. There are some elements of Ashtanga Yoga that may show up in my teachings. While I follow the Iyengar Yoga method, I like to keep an open mind, be curious and try different approaches if and when they make sense.
Initially, I practiced, studied and taught Ashtanga Yoga and I became the first Authorized Ashtanga Yoga teacher by Sharath Jois in my home country, Turkey. I also had the privilege of studying with some of the first generation Ashtanga Yoga teacher, such as Maty Ezraty, Chuck Miller, Richard Freeman and very dear Rolf Naujokat. They all showed me great kindness and generosity, which I hold close to my heart as some of the most valuable teachings. I taught my own Ashtanga program in Istanbul until moving to Copenhagen to be with my husband. After moving to Copenhagen in 2013, I began studying Iyengar yoga with Jette Berring and got certified as an Iyengar Yoga Teacher in 2017. I taught for Jette Berring in her yoga school in Copenhagen for more than two years. Jette mentored me generously, which I am very grateful for. Besides studying with Jette, I also studied with other senior Iyengar yoga teachers such as Lois Steinberg and Patricia Walden. In January 2020, I attended a teachers training program in India with A.G. Mohan, personal student of Krishnamacharya, and his family.
Now, I continue with my Iyengar yoga studies and I am looking forward to sharing my love of yoga practice with you in my small studio!
